Nameservers are important to allow people to visit your new website. They’re like an address book that tells each visitor how to reach you. Once you have a domain with access to a registrar account, we can set up your nameservers with a few copy-pastes.
If you bought your domain from CloudFlare, you can skip the following steps and reach out to our team to finish your site setup with Winnable. If you think you got your domain on CloudFlare, use this look up tool to confirm. It’s rare to buy domains on CloudFlare (though you might use it for other purposes).
Login to your registrar
First things first, login to the registrar where you bought your domain. For most registrars, there should be a “Domain” section in the admin, or an overview for the domain you purchased.
Copy-paste nameservers
Next you have to locate the nameserver settings for your domain. There is probably a “Domain” section of your registrar account, or an overview page for the domain you just bought. You may need to select “Use Custom Nameservers”. Here’s instructions on how to find the nameserver settings in common registrars:
1and1, 101Domain, Amazon, Blacknight, BlueHost, DirectNIC, DNSMadeEasy, Domain.com, Dotster, DreamHost, EasyDNS, Enom, Fast Domain, FlokiNET, Gandi, GoDaddy, HostGator, Hostico, HostMonster, hover, Internetdbs, iPage, MediaTemple, MelbourneIT, Moniker, Name.com, NameCheap, Network Solutions, OVH, Porkbun, Rackspace, Register, Site5, Softlayer, Tucows, Yahoo!, Yola
Once you’ve found the place to update nameservers in your registrar, indicate that you want to add custom values, then paste in the following values:
ns1.winnable.app
ns2.winnable.app
Be careful not to add any extra spaces.
Be sure these are the only values listed as nameservers for your domain.
Save the changes you made in your registrar account.
Troubleshooting
If you're certain that you updated your nameserver values correctly, but your domain status is stuck as "Pending", wait 10-20 minutes and check back later. Sometimes it takes time for nameserver values to propagate across different services.
**It’s possible (though rare) that your registrar turned on DNSSEC, which is a minor security feature that you don’t really need since Winnable handles security for you. You also need to turn this off while we set up your nameservers. You might be able to see the DNSSEC information for your domain in the “Domain” section of your registrar account, possibly in the “Advanced” section of the domain’s settings. If you don't see this information, try moving forward to the next steps - you probably don't have DNSSEC and don't need to worry about it. Here’s specific info on how to turn off DNSSEC for some common registrars:
DNSimple, domaindiscount24, DreamHost, dynadot, enom, gandi, GoDaddy, hover, InMotion Hosting, INWX, Joker.com, name.com, namecheap, nameISP, namesilo, OVH, Public Domain Registry, registro.br
